All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) condoles death of Indira Goswami


Guwahati, Nov 29 (IBNS): The All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) has deeply condoled the death of Jnanpith Award winning litterateur Indira Goswami (Mamoni Raisom Goswami) passed away on Tuesday.

Goswami died at 7.45 amon Tuesday at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.

The former HoD of Assamese Dept. at Delhi University was an editor, poet, professor, scholar was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world. She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.

In an statement released to the media, Nanda Kirati Dewan, Information and Publicity Secretary of AAGSU said, "Dr. Indira Goswami popular as Moromor Mamoni Baideo had been lifelong writer of the masses. She not only simply wrote masterpieces and felt the essence of her content and ventured to help out the needy and underprivileged as mentioned in many of her novels. She always encouraged youths to be creative, artistic and an asset to the nation. This is an irreparable loss to the nation’s literary world specially a never filling void for Assam. The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) deeply condoles the death of the legend lady and will organize prayers across the state through our dist. unit."

Recalling one of his personal conversation with Mamoni Raisom Goswami in one of the meeting the AAGSU leader was quoted as saying to electronic media at her Gandhi Basti residence in Guwahati, ‘'She told me 'Take enough pride that you are a Gorkha the community you represent by heart and soul, blood and flesh but do not forget you also are an Assamese by birth and an Indian by nationality. Write something about Gorkhas of this nation and the pride you take to be a Gorkha'. Encouraged by her, I coined 'Gorkhas-Son of the Soil, Pride of the Nation' and wrote my one of the best article."

A team of AAGSU leaders will visit the litterateur’s house to meet the grief striken family members and handover the condolence message.

Greater Guwahati Gorkha Students’ Union, Guwahati City Gorkha Students’ Union, various college units of AAGSU Guwahati University Gorkha Students have visited the GMCH and her residence to pay last respect, tribute and homage to the legend and will join the furenal pyre.
