Kolkata, Nov. 12: This week at Sale No. 45, the total offerings (packages) at North Indian tea auction centres in Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri were 4,35,980 as compared to 4,60,038 in the corresponding sale of last year, according to tea auctioneers J. Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd.
The drop in offerings was largely due to lower offerings of CTC/Dust at Kolkata and Siliguri and of orthodox at Kolkata.
The offerings at Kolkata this week were 1,55,396 packages (1,97,821) comprising 97,646 CTC/Dust ( 1,38,925), 50,614 orthodox (52,825) and 7,136 Darjeeling (6,071).
The corresponding figures for Guwahati were 1,68,749 (1,49,974) and for Siliguri 1,11,835 (1,12,243).
Selected clean and better liquoring Assam CTC maintaining quality were around previous levels and occasionally dearer. The remainder were irregularly lower because of quality. Well-made Dooars sold readily at firm to occasionally dearer rates while the remainder tended irregularly easier. Tata Global was active. There was fair support from Hindustan Unilever for the leaf grades and active support for the dusts. Western India dealers were active for the liquoring sorts. There were fair number of enquiries from North India and from local sections. Exporters operated on the bolder brokens and fannings.
Demand for orthodox offerings was better. Selected cleaner whole leaf and larger brokens grades were around last. The remainder tended easier. North India operated on the bolder whole leaf. Tippy varieties saw some export enquiries. There were fair number of enquiries from Hindustan Unilever for the fannings.
Selected Darjeeling whole leaf and broken varieties maintaining quality witnessed good enquiries and sold well around previous levels. The remainder tended lower. There were good enquiries from Hindustan Unilever while Tata Global operated selectively. Local dealers operated for cheaper sorts.
