Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung unhappy with Chief Minister

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung is “unhappy” with the alleged “lacklustre approach” of the Bengal Government towards implementation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) pact.

He has threatened Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a fresh stir for a separate State to protest lack of development in Darjeeling.

On Tuesday, Gurung said, “The GJM is observing with regret that this Government is delivering only high-sounding nothing. There are more talks and promises and no implementation.”

He added, “Not a step has been taken to implement the GTA treaty, which was signed by the Chief Minister.” Gurung added, “Many Ministers come and go and promise heavens but when it comes to delivering, they vanish. This won’t be allowed to continue.”

Gurung’s statement comes barely a couple of days after the Gorkha Jan Yuva Morcha, the party youth wing, threatened a fresh and prolonged movement to press for their demands. The GJYM will hold a rally at Siliguri on February 12.

The GJM chief said, “We are under pressure from the people to show the fruits of the agreement. If the GTA treaty fails to take off, there is no point continuing with this peace drama.” He made a thinly-veiled threat, saying if the Government failed to convert its promises into action, then “we have other ways to make them listen to us”.

Party number two Roshan Giri had signed the GTA treaty. Gurung said despite the pact, his party was not going back on the Statehood demand.

The GJM is unhappy with Banerjee for failing to get funds from the Centre to reconstruct the remote quake-hit areas in the Hills. It is planning to send an ultimatum to the Chief Minister, according to party sources. The party had demanded `1,000-crore package.

GJM is not taking part in the Tea Festival organised by the Government to promote tourism in North Bengal. According to sources, the party leadership is livid with the Trinamool Congress. A senior leader said, “Some parties from south Bengal are trying to use the good offices of the GJM in their bid to make entry into the Hills which is not acceptable to us.”

The party is “taking advantage of being in power and by dint of its working equation with the GJM leadership, it is trying to get some of our men defected. But that would not be allowed and their partymen would be banished from Darjeeling like GNLF, Congress and CPI(M),” he added.
