Siliguri, Feb. 20.TT: A 28-year-old accountant who had allegedly decamped with around Rs 10 lakh from his employer in Siliguri was murdered by his three accomplices to grab the entire amount.
Police today disinterred the body of Ashish Dutta from a field in the Rajgunj block of Jalpaiguri and arrested the three youths who had allegedly committed the murder.
Dutta, a resident of Champasari in Siliguri, was an accountant in the office of a wholesale rice merchant at Nayabazar in town.
“On February 8, the accountant was given Rs 9.5 lakh to deposit the amount in bank. Dutta contacted Tahirul Islam, one of his acquaintances, and sought his help to escape with the money. Tahirul was offered a portion of the amount,” Amit P. Javalgi, the additional superintendent of police, Siliguri, told journalists here this evening.
“Tahirul, in turn, arranged a Maruti van driven by Zakir Ali and asked Rafiqul Islam also to join the operation.
However, Tahirul, Rafiqul and Zakir hatched another plot — to kill Dutta and take hold of the entire amount. “The three murdered Dutta, probably after the car had left Siliguri, and buried his body at Jatiakali,” said the ASP.
Javalgi didn’t say when and how Dutta had been murdered.
The trio are from Jatiakali, around 15km from here.
The police launched the probe after Shyamsundar Agarwal, the rice merchant, had filed a complaint against Dutta. The investigators checked Dutta’s call register with the telecom service provider and found that he had contacted Tahirul.
The police arrested Tahilrul yesterday and also picked up Zakir on the basis of information given by the former. “Zakir has a criminal background. We picked up Rafiqul today and seized his car. We also recovered Rs 5.5 lakh from the trio,” said a police officer.
He added that the police were trying to find out if Tahilrul and Rafiqul had also criminal antecedents.
Javalgi said a clear picture of the crime would emerge only after a further probe.
After the admission of the crime by the three, the police today went to Jatiakali and exhumed the body.
“Tahirul and Zakir were today remanded in police custody for seven days. Rafiqul will be produced in court tomorrow. We can give details on the murder and the remaining cash (Rs 4 lakh) only after a thorough interrogation of the trio,” said Javalgi.
