Siliguri, May 22.TT: A construction engineer at an NHPC site was shot dead in Salugara near Siliguri this evening while on his way home from work.
Police said 31-year-old Sandip Kumar Singh was from Bihar’s Balia. He was shot probably from a speeding bike around 8pm near his apartment on Debi Choudhurani Road. Local people said they saw the bike with two persons speeding away, a sound of cracker bursting and the engineer collapsing to the ground.
The police took him to a nursing home on Sevoke Road where he was declared dead.
The police said Singh was an employee of HCC that has been engaged by the NHPC at its Teesta low dam project in Kalijhora, 35km from Siliguri.
“We are clueless about the incident. He was a fine person and had no enmity with anyone,” HCC medical officer and one of Singh’s collegues Amlan Satpathi said.
The engineer used to stay in Salugara, on the outskirts of Siliguri but part of Jalpaiguri district, with his mother and wife, whom he had married a year ago. “Although the cause of death would be confirmed only after post-mortem, it seems he was shot in the chest. There is also an injury mark on his forehead,” a doctor at the nursing home said.
The additional superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri, James Kuzur, said: “It seems to be an incident of murder and our officers have rushed to the spot,” he said.
