Mukesh Sharma: In one hand when the people are destroying the environment in the name of development and modernization, Tulsi Rai in the other hand has set an example in conserving the environment by his own unique way. Rai, a resident of College Valley, Sonada, has been planting medicinal plants for the past 7 – 8 years. His 2 ½ acres of land house 153 species of rare medicinal plants. Only in Darjeeling hills, there are approximately around 4000 different species plants out of which 500 are medicinal plants. But it is remarkable, how this 76 year old has been able to plant and conserve more than 150 rare medicinal plants at his home. This can also be regarded as a ‘historical step’ towards conservation of the environment.
When the scientist were searching for a land for sugar beet plantation in replace of sugarcane for producing sugar, Rai gained much applause from the scientists for he was successful in planting sugar beet. It may be mentioned that sugar beet plantation is nowhere in the country. After gaining much success in sugar beet plantation, Rai then concentrated in planting medicinal plants.
Appreciating the contribution of Rai in environmental conservation, the Kalimpong Krishak Sangathan has initiated its steps in naming Rai’s land into Conservation Park. The Sangathan’s Secretary, Vishnu Chettri notified that after the land is named Conservation Park, the Sangathan will be protecting it under the Patent Right.
