Suresh Bhujal of Kalimpong - Another cop job seeker dies of heat

KOLKATA, 11 JUNE: Suresh Bhujal (21) who took part in the physical endurance test for the post of constables in city police on 6 June died at SSKM hospital this morning. This is the second such incident in the past week.
Avishek Pal, another youth who also participated in the physical endurance test for the post of constables in city police, had died at SSKM on 6 June. Both fell sick during the 1,600-metre sprint because of intense heat. Both were taken to SSKM hospital where they died.
Suresh had come to the city from Kalimpong. He completed the 1,600-metre sprint in 6.5 minutes. After the test he felt restless and became unconscious. The paramedical staff at Race Course, where the test was being conducted, admitted him to SSKM hospital. It is learnt that Suresh was not attended to by the hospital staff for more than three hours. He was running high temperature. He was provided a bed only in the evening.
Suresh was shifted to ICU on 7 June after his condition deteriorated. He was provided life support and later put on dialysis, police said. Yesterday his liver and lung stopped functioning and he was kept on ventilation. At 5.45 a.m. today Suresh died at the hospital due to “multi-organ failure”, police said.
Soon after his death, the relatives of Suresh alleged that he died due to negligence on the part of the Kolkata police. They even expressed their dissatisfaction over the recruitment process that included physical test under the scorching sun. However, experts said that conducting physical test at over 36 degrees Celsius is unscientific.
After the death of Avishek questions were being raised over the medical facilities available at the ground, which is vital to save patients suffering from heatstroke.
“There were no oxygen cylinders at Race Course Ground where the recruitment drive is taking place. No trained medical staff was present at the ground,” said a senior officer of the city police soon after the death of Avishek.
Meanwhile, family members of Avishek met the Commissioner of city police, Mr RK Pachnanda, at police headquarters in Lalbazar.
Relatives of Avishek met chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee at Writers’ Buildings this afternoon. They later said that Miss Banerjee assured them all  help.
