Darjeeling, 10 February : Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) is preparing projects on a war-footing so as to stop the first Central assistance of Rs 200 crore
from getting returned unspent.
GTA chief, Bimal Gurung today stressed all the projects be put in places by 22-23 February ~ deadline the amount allocated for the development of the Hills freezes if unspent.
Laying the foundation stone for the construction of a multi-disciplinary Krishi Bhawan near Gorkha Ranga Manch Bhawan in Darjeeling, Mr Gurung said GTA has to submit the reports of the projects worth Rs 200 crore by next month.
He said GTA will not allow a single penny to freeze. "I would not allow the money meant for development to go waste," he
asserted.
During a 'prithi bhoj' (friendship feast) at Jamuni in Darjeeling earlier this month, Mr Gurung had said GTA would immediately okay 30-35 development projects under the Central fund before the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections gets in force.
During the friendship feast, Mr Gurung had also said the former autonomous body in the Hills ~ Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) ~ had failed to submit its project reports which was why the Centre had frozen Rs 120 crore. “We will not let the same happen with GTA," he had said.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the proposed Krishi Bhawan will be getting around Rs 2 crore and 94 lakh.
"The three-storey building will contain infrastructure related to the agricultural sector. It will have a soil-testing laboratory, a conference hall, a training centre and research facilities and will also house the administrative building of the agriculture department," the executive member of GTA’s Agriculture department, Mr Kalyan Dewan said.
On 12 February, Mr Gurung is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the construction of a 10-bed hospital at Kagey under the 38th Lava-Lingsay constituency of Kalimpong, while on 13 February, he will lay the foundation stone for the construction of a ropeway in Jamuni.
