Morcha expected to win as candidates withdraw nominations

SILIGURI/KOLKATA, 9 JULY: The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) is going to win as many as 12 seats in the 45-member Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) uncontested and the number is likely to go up to at least 17 once the withdrawal of nomination and scrutiny of the papers get over for the election scheduled to be held on 29 July.
At present, the number of candidates in the fray stands at 123. According to information given by the office of the Darjeeling district magistrate,  there will be contests in 33 out of the 45 seats. There are 45 GJMM candidates, 18 are from the Trinamul Congress and 13 from the CPI-M in the poll fray. Also, there are 46 Independents contesting the election. Besides, Rashtriya Jan Adhikari Suraksha Party has fielded its sole candidate in a seat in Kalimpong. In 22 constituencies across Darjeeling sub-division, 40 candidates  have filed their nomination but the GJMM has won nine constituencies without a contest. In Kalimpong sub-division, 26 nominations have been filed in 13 constituencies. The GJMM has won three seats straightaway without a contest.
However, in the Kurseong sub-division, there would be contest in all the 10 constituencies. Fifty-seven candidates, including 43 Independents have filed nomination for the 10 seats going to poll. But sources said at least five candidates are “dummies” and may be withdrawn to pave the way for GJMM's majority in the GTA.
“The number of the candidates to contest the GTA election might  come down on the last day of the withdrawal of nomination which is on 12 July. The process of filing nomination went off smoothly in all the three sub-divisions across the Hills today. We have received a few minor complaints. We will deal with them accordingly” said the district magistrate, Mr Soumitra Mohan.
Meanwhile, in a bid to make the poll “free and fair” police escorted several non-GJMM candidates from their residences to the DM office and back, a senior police official said.
