More rain forecast for deluged north | Floods worsen after embankment breaks in West Bengal

Kolkata The continuous rainfall has aggravated the flood situation in north Bengal and several rivers are close to the extreme danger level. There is no relief in sight, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast in Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.

A report issued by the state government said around 1,13,629 people in 285 villages and five municipalities of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar have been affected. Champsari area in Siliguri is also badly affected.

Around 2,483 houses were totally damaged while 10,270 houses were partially damaged. Two teams of National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in Jalpaiguri for search and rescue operations.

Around 69 relief camps have been opened in these areas and 18,960 affected people have taken shelter there, the report adds.

State irrigation minister Manas Bhunia said due to continuous rainfall, the flood situation had worsened. Rivers carrying rainwater from Bhutan are threatening areas in Darjeeling, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri. The district administration has been instructed to take urgent relief measures.

“We have started restoration of the breach of Mahananda river, but the work is being hampered because of rainfall. I met Gautam Deb, minister in charge of North Bengal Development Corporation, today and also spoke with the DM of Darjeeling. We have decided to set up a circular embankment to stop the flood,” he said.

Areas like Rotua and Harishchandrapur of Malda district have also been inundated as the Fular river is overflowing. Two trained elephants were deployed yesterday to rescue over 350 marooned residents of Khayerkata village after the lone bridge linking it to Dhupguri town collapsed. Bhunia said construction of a bridge was urgently required in the area.

Officials added that the water level in Teesta river had touched the extreme danger mark and the Reti and Dudhua had flooded large tracts in Jalpaiguri district, including Khayerkata village and Dhupguri, a tea garden area. Torsa river at Ghugumari is rising steadily.

The total relief assistance given between July 14 and July 18 is Rs 143.7 lakh. Beneficiaries will receive the money soon, Bhunia added.

Floods worsen after embankment breaks in West Bengal


Darjeeling, July 19 : Flood situation in West Bengal deteriorated on Thursday as heavy downpour breached embankment, flooding several villages and towns.

Several villages near Siliguri under Darjeeling district were flooded when the Mahananda River embankment broke again after heavy showers, bringing the road communication to standstill.

The Sub-Divisional Officer, Bhivhav Srivastav, said the water level of Mahananda River had crossed the danger-level and rescue operations are in full swing.

"The flood situation is alarming and water levels have risen. The river is changing its flow. The local administration and policemen are taking adequate measures to control the situation." Srivastav said.

Soldiers and rescue workers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed for rescue and relief efforts.

"For the rescue operations, rescue relief team of civil defence has reached the spot and the NDRF will report within an hour. We have also arranged five buses through which we will take people to safe places," he said.

Reportedly, floods in Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Cooch Behar have affected more than 80,000 people, drowning vast stretches of agricultural lands and rendered hundreds of families, homeless.

The monsoon this year has caused heavy floods in eastern and northeastern parts of the country like West Bengal, Assam, claiming several lives and causing extensive damage to property. (ANI)
