KOLKATTA: City tourist dies in Darjeeling car accident: Poor visibility due to dense fog claimed the life of a tourist from Kolkata on Sunday evening in Darjeeling sub-division. The car in which Govind Rakshit, the 50-year-old from Hatibagan, and his family members were travelling had skidded off the road after the driver lost control over the wheels and fell into a 15-feet gorge.
Other passengers - Aruna Dey, 67, Saibal Mitra, 50, Manju Rakshit 41 and the driver - were rushed to the Darjeeling sub-divisional hospital. All of them are said to be stable. tnn
Recollecting the accident, Mitra said from the hospital bed: "The weather was cold and the fog was really dense. We could not see even few meters ahead of the vehicle. I don't know how but the car skidded off the road and crashed 15 feet below. We were lucky to escape with injuries but sadly, one of us is dead."
Govind was badly injured on the head by the impact of the crash and had died on way to the hospital. The others were first treated at the Sukia block health camp and then shifted to the Darjeeling hospital. Somu Rakshit, the victim's son, escaped unhurt.
The family had come to Darjeeling on a vacation holiday on January 5. On Sunday, the family had hired the vehicle for a tour to Mirik and Pashupati (Indo-Nepal border). En route to Darjeeling, they had stopped at Jhorpokhari. The accident took place few minutes after the family left Jhorpokhari for Darjeeling.
Police official said that the road condition could have been the factor for the vehicle skidding off the road.
"From what we have learnt, the vehicle was moving at a very slow speed because of the weather condition. Most probably, dew on the road made the vehicle skid off," said a senior official of the Darjeeling sadar police station.
S Bhowmick, the chief medical officer of health of the district hospital, said that the condition of the four injured were stable but all of them had sustained multiple fractures on their legs and hands.
