MIDNAPORE, 28 JUNE: An eight-month pregnant woman alleged that she
was beaten up by a team of Daspur police late last night when the cops
raided the house to arrest Sheikh Karim, her brother-in-law, who was
released and got bail from court, trying him in a murder case. The
incident occurred at Gopiganj in the Daspur police station area in West
Midnapore. Sakila Begum, who was critically beaten up by the
Daspur police, has been admitted to the Daspur hospital in a serious
condition. The family members of Karim accused the police team of
ransacking their house to arrest Karim. Karim, who was a CPI-M worker,
was arrested by police in connection with a murder case, but when he was
released from the jail on personal bond, police had asked him not to
stay in his house till the panchayat polls were over. Karim's relatives
alleged that police suddenly raided the house and arrested Karim without
any reason.
The police team also beat up his wife and aged mother
when they put up a resistance. Police didn't even spare Sakila, wife of
Karim's brother, when she tried to stop police from arresting
Karim. Karim had returned home to observe Sabe-barat. Protesting the
arrest and the assault on housewives, residents put up a roadblock at
Gopiganj and Sultanpur. None of the police officers were available for
comments. The local CPI-M leadership alleged that police have framed
their worker in a false case.
