Marking the 14th anniversary of the Kargil War with Pakistan, a ‘Vijay Diwas’ ceremony to honour Gorkha soldiers who laid down their lives for the country was observed today in Darjeeling by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration.
GTA officials gathered at the Batasia War Memorial in the morning to pay their respects to the 26 Gorkha soldiers who died in the 1999 war with Pakistan at Kargil.
The ceremony was attended by GTA deputy chief executive Col (Retd) Ramesh Allay where Col (Retd) TB Subba was the chief guest. “The Gorkhas have always sacrificed and laid down their lives for the sake of the country during crucial moments. We must honour these great men who never thought twice when guarding the country while we slept peacefully in the comfort of our homes,” noted Allay.
The country fought its fourth war with Pakistan in the summer of May 1999. The reason was encroachment and infringement by the Pakistani army into Indian territory along the Line of Control demarcating the international boundary separating the two nations.
The Madras Regiment initiated a bugle salute and played the national anthem followed by a wreath-laying by the dignitaries
present at the occasion.
The venue shifted to Darjeeling Gymkhana Club where the families of the 26 martyrs were felicitated. Mementos were presented to them in remembrance of their loved ones.
The Zilla Sainik Board had been observing the event before the formation of the GTA and with the board now included in the latter, the new council will be organising the event from now on. “The sainik board department is now a transferred subject and hence we will organise the event from now on,” said the GTA deputy chief executive.
A cultural programme was also organised during the day by the GTA information and cultural affairs department.(EOIC)
