Kalimpong, Mukesh Sharma: The first day of a three day strike in kalimpong went tense after report Over ten GJM supporters were arrested by the police when they tried to block the highway at Rambi today.The police intervened and arrested 10 GJM supporters,while the remaining fled from the picketing spot.
Mean while A motorcycle bearing number SK01 -P7674 and the savari vehilce SK 01 j 2560 were burnt by unidentified person at Malli and Romphu on the National Highway 31A, police said. Due to this case
vehilce from sikkim state were escorted by kalimpong police till siliguri .The flow of vehilce was quite less today due to the strike in Darjeeling
Kalimpong town wore a deserted look with traffic off the roads and markets and offices closed.
There is a Supreme Court directive that the highway has to be kept free during bandhs and blockades in the hills.
The bandh is to demand Gorkhaland which is a 107-year-old demand, the GJM said.
A hundered of GJM supporter were picketing at damber chowk with party flags in which a chevelot beat vehilce was vandalised by the picketers after minor discussion,later when the police reached the spot after
the incident the situation became tense after kalimpong P.S in charge A.Gupta and GTA deputy chief Col Ramesh Allay was seen in heated argument in between large gatherings of party supporters raised the
voice against Bengal police and for gorkhaland . .
Roads were also barricaded by the GJM supporters .Despite warning from state government to the employee offices, schools were closed today
The only traffic on the roads were ambulances and vehicles carrying people to weddings or sradh ceremonies.
There was no work in the tea gardens in the hills.
Meanwhile GJM president bimal gurung declared that the strike will continue as the party is keeping a close watch on the decision of congress party on telengana .he said that he will within a day or two will resign from the GTA .
