The three-tier Panchayat election in the Dooars concluded successfully today with no reports of major violence breaking out. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha had formed an alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for the first time here and fielded candidates.
Areas with a significant number of Gorkha residents such as Malbazar, Mateli, Madarihat, Birpara and Kalchini saw peaceful conclusion of election procedures. A total of 11 gram Panchayats, 32 Panchayat samiti and 3 zilla parishad seats were up for contest by 735, 133 and 17 candidates, respectively.
The Kalchini block administration said around 70-80 percent votes were polled. The voting process started from six in the morning amid a peaceful atmosphere. Polling booths were seen crowded in the earlier part of the day, thinning out gradually as the day progressed, added sources.(EOIC)
