Darjeeling, 17 July: The Darjeeling police have stated that Dawa Sangay, one of the accused
in the Madan Tamang assassination case, had tried to escape today from
the Darjeeling District Hospital where he had been lodged in police
custody.
He surrendered to the chief judicial magistrate court along with 12 others on 17 June. Police have, however, foiled the escape bid and brought him back in police custody.
It is learnt that his name along with several others have figured in the charge-sheet filed by the CBI. After being interrogated by the CBI, Dawa Sangay, Prabin Subba, Kamal Lama and Tenzing Khambachay had been admitted to the Darjeeling District Hospital for their supposed sickness, while others had been sent to the jail.
Police have further said that they would appeal to the district court to examine whether the accused having been admitted at the hospital are really ‘sick’ or are feigning sickness to stay away from the jail with an intention to escape.
According to the Darjeeling Superintendent of Police, Mr Kunal Agarwal, he had received information about Dawa Sangay’s escape bid around 1 p.m. today.
“Accordingly, we approached the hospital authority. Another accused, Tenzing Khambachay, is supposed to have intended to escape, but as he saw police he went back to his bed. Dawa was arrested from the Darjeeling bazaar while he was trying to flee. Dawa claimed that he had gone to the bazaar for a pathological test. We are probing the matter seriously,” Mr Agarwal said.
“We will request the court to examine whether these accused are really sick or they are just pretending sickness with a motive to escape,” he added.
Dawa would be produced at the district court tomorrow, he further informed.
Notably, the principal accused of the assassination case, Nicole Tamang, who had given the sleuths a slip while he had been kept under the CID custody at Pintail Village near Siliguri in August 2010, has remained elusive till date with the CBI which had taken up the case from the CID having failed to locate him.
