Senior CPM leader and former minister Ashok Bhattacharya today slammed the state government for its policy on the issue of Gorkhaland. He also left no stone unturned in condemning the Congress-led central government including the BJP for engaging in ‘vote bank’ politics.
Speaking at a press conference at the Anil Biswas Bhawan, the CPM party office, Bhattacharya condemned the central government for endorsing statehood status to Telangana. “This move will encourage a number of separatist movements across the country on the basis of language, caste and other socio-economic issues,” he warned.
The CPM leader also accused the Trinamool Congress for engaging in “double-standard” politics. He said, “The TMC had done the same thing from 2009 to 2011 regarding the issue of Gorkhaland what the central government is doing at present on Telangana. The Left Front government had called an all party meeting to resolve the Gorkhaland issue, but the TMC did not attend that meet. It instead made a covert agreement with the GJM to defeat the CPM in the elections in Darjeeling district.”
Bhattacharya further slammed the TMC, Congress and BJP for playing with the sentiments of the Gorkha people. Attacking the BJP, he said, “In the last parliamentary election, we saw the mean ‘vote bank’ politics of BJP. Their leader Jaswant Singh assured the people of Darjeeling that if they voted for him, he would give them Gorkhaland. But has he fulfilled his promise?”
The Left leader went on to accuse the TMC of encouraging the GJM in its statehood demand by signing the GTA pact. He said, “The CPM respects the sentiments of the Gorkha people, but it does not support their demand for a separate state. We recommend more autonomy to the Darjeeling Hills but not a separate state.”(EOI)
