Gangtok, 9 August: The ongoing Gorkhaland movement in the neighbouring Darjeeling Hills of Bengal has seen support in Sikkim.
To show solidarity with those engaged in the stir for their long-pending demand for a separate state, the members of Sikkim unit of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha began a relay hunger strike outside the East
District Collector’s Office in Gangtok yesterday.
A total of 12 GJMM activists, including those associated with several frontal organisations like the Jan Mukti Chalak Mahasangh, are
participating in the relay hunger strike.
This phase of the hunger strike would end with a peace rally to be staged in Gangtok on 14 August.
The GJMM’s Sikkim unit vice president, Mr Deependra Dewan, said that the hunger strike is meant to invest the current movement in the Hills of Bengal a pan-Indian flavour.
“Since the Sikkim government has already passed a resolution in the state Assembly favouring creation of Gorkhaland, we expect the people across the ethnic divide in Sikkim to lend whole-hearted support to the cause of Gorkhaland,” he added. sns
