Kolkata, 26 December: Finally, GJMM chief Bimal Gurung took oath today as the new chief executive of the Hill council in Darjeeling, from where he had resigned in July agitating for a separate state.
Mr Gurung ~ in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, other cabinet ministers, three GJMM MLAs and other leaders from the Gorkha community ~ took the oath to the office of chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). The oath-taking ceremony was presided over by Governor M K Narayanan.
Setting aside his demand for separate statehood in Darjeeling, Mr Gurung's U-turn and return to the GTA is seen as a political victory for Ms Banerjee, whose tough stance on the issue of Gorkhaland forced the GJMM strongman and his outfit to beat a retreat from their demand of separate statehood.
Mr Gurung had resigned from the post of GTA chief executive on 30 July after intensifying the GJMM agitation for Gorkhaland following the Centre's decision to create Telangana.
The CM said, “From now on, a new innings has started for Darjeeling.”(SNS)
