Kolkata/Siliguri 22 February: With the parliamentary elections inching closer, The Trinamul Congress is trying to increase its strength in the Darjeeling hills. Former GNLF MLA Shanta Chhetri joined the Trinamul Congress today.
She was accompanied by several leaders including former Darjeeling Municiplaity chairman, Prasant Bhutia, Nirma Bhutia, Debjani Rung, and Bhanu Lama.
Addressing a Press conference after the joining of the GNLF leaders, AITC national secretary Mukul Roy said that Darjeeling is a part and parcel of the state and no agitation by the GJMM can detach it.
The manner in which the Telengana Bill has been passed is shameful to democracy, he said.
We have joined the Trinamul Congress to get an opportunity for the upliftment of the hill people, Ms Chhetri said.
Ms Chhetri's joining the Trinamul Congress would not affect the organisational strength of GNLF in the hills, party chief Subash Ghisingh told his supporters at his Matigara residence during the day.
He further said that he would soon announce the date of his returning to the hills soon.
