Funds for development of Darjeeling,Kalimpong municipalities

Kolkata, 11 February: The Municipal Affairs Department has sanctioned around Rs 2.8 crore to Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) for development of Darjeeling and Kalimpong municipalities.
The money has been sanctioned under the scheme of development of municipal areas within the jurisdiction of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The financial assistance will be used mainly for maintenance and repair of roads and footpaths as well as undertaking beautification initiative like construction of railings on the hilly roads.
The funds will also be spent for upgrade and setting up new sewerage lines.
Some of the guest houses in these areas are in poor condition. So, a major portion of the grant will be spent for renovating them.
The GTA is supposed to receive a Central assistance of Rs 200 crore for the next three subsequent years for undertaking development of the Hills.
This apart, the departments have been asked to create a separate head and set aside a portion of funds from the departmental budgets for the GTA.
The Rs 28,561,000 that has been sanctioned by the department has been arranged from the budgetary provisions of 2013-14.
The members of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha had earlier alleged that the state government has been delaying releasing funds to GTA for taking up development work.(SNS)
