Kurseong, 18 February: Though supporters of the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) have
failed to bring their supremo, Mr Subash Ghisingh, back to the political
stage of the Darjeeling Hills in person they have managed to capture
him and keep him too, and how.
Mr Ghisingh seems very much with them on the social networking site Facebook, sending cheers among those adoring him.
For the past few days, a group photo of the GNLF supremo and his supporters is being widely circulated among supporters on Facebook.
Interestingly, observers say this may be the first time ever since the emergence of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) that the GNLF supremo is seen surrounded by his supporters. The photo has purportedly been taken at Mr Ghisingh’s rented residence in Matigara, Siliguri.
“We have been sharing the group photo among GNLF supporters across the Hills, plains and the world for the past few days and this has given us the much-needed and boost. Moreover, we now feel our chief is by our side,” a GNLF loyal said.
He added that Mr Ghisingh is the only Gorkha leader working tirelessly in the interests of the Gorkha community for agess. “As such, by uploading and sharing the photo on Facebook, we have been appealing to the people to support the party supremo and the issue of the Sixth Schedule that he personifies,” he said.
According to GNLF supporters, another aim of the photo being circulated is to convey to the “disappointed” GNLF supporters that Mr Ghisingh is now on warm terms with his supporters and he is even getting himself photographed with them.
A section of the GNLF workers was disappointed when Mr Ghisingh failed to turn up at a public meeting held at Simulbarie near Siliguri on the occasion of the Sixth Schedule Accord Day. While the photo does expose the frailness of the leader in casuals it is reinvigorating his supporters, observers said.
Notably, due to political reasons and his ill health related to old age, Mr Ghisingh has not been able to return to the Darjeeling Hills where he was once the ‘king,’ even if he wished so, for the past five years.(SNS)
