Kurseong 14 March: Central committee member of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) Bimal Darjee was arrested from his residence in Tindharia under the Kurseong sub-division today.
According to the police, various cases and charges are pending in courts against him.
He was produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s (ACJM) Court here, where his lawyers filed bail petitions. However, the court rejected the bail pleas and sent him to Kurseong jail.
Asked by reporters, defence lawyers Rajen Thapa and HW Lama said Mr Darjee was produced in the court over different cases under various sections, mainly over five cases filed against him in between 2007 and 2011.
The lawyers said he has been charged with blocking the highway, disturbing police activities, arson and attempted murder.
An arson case had been registered against him at the Kurseong police station on 8 February 2011. He had then allegedly set on fire a forest bungalow at Dhungey Kothi near Mahanadi in Kurseong.
An attempt to murder case under section 307 of the IPC had been filed against him on 11 September 2009, when he had allegedly attacked the then GNLF leader IN Pradhan in Ghayabari. He has also been charged with damaging government property.
According to the lawyers, so many of the cases against Mr Darjee were bailable ones, but they said the accused was not given bail on any of the cases, as the charges were old and
pending, while even warrants had been issued in his name.
The court has asked scheduled hearings on 18 and 19 March, where his lawyers will again move the bail petitions.
As Mr Darjee was taken to the court, several GJMM activists and senior GJMM leaders and members of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), gathered on the court premises today.
A GTA member from Mahanadi-Tindharia constituency, Prabha Chettri, who was present on the court premises, said the Trinamul Congress-led state government is trying to “suppress us on different aspects through these arrests ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, but they should understand that the more they try to suppress us, the more we would benefit, as we will be getting more votes.”
GJMM leader Binay Tamang said he knew that the TMC government would arrest GJMM leaders. (SNS)
