Two players of the United Karate Do Association recognised by the
Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) have been selected to
represent India in the upcoming Asian Shito Ryu Karate Championship to
be held in Singapore.
Athletes of the also won five medals, including two
gold, in the recently concluded 21st All India Shito Ryu Karate
Championship at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
Talking to reporters here, the team leader and coach, Deven Gurung alias Debu, said that on 12 August, a 12-member team of the association had left Darjeeling Hills to participate in the 21st All India Shito Ryu Karate Championship held between 15 to 17 August. He said that a total of 17 teams from 17 different places in India had participated in the championship.
Black Belt Kulehri Rai, 40, a resident of Lavalingsey in Kalimpong bagged a gold in the ‘Kata’ Tournament. He, along with Dipesh Chauhan, 18, a resident of Kurseong, also bagged gold in the ‘Kumite’, below 59 kg category. Another team member Saideep Tamang, 14, from Mirik grabbed two medals, a silver and a bronze in the 35 to 40 kg category ‘kata’ tournament. Later, Sawan Rai, 13, of Kurseong also won a bronze in the ‘kumite’ tournament. Both the gold medalists, Kulehri Rai and Dipesh Chauhan, have been selected by the organizing committee of the “All India Shito Ryu Karate Federation” for the Singapore tournament on 14, 15 and 16 December.

Taekwondo athletes make Darjeeling proud
Darjeeling, 24 August: Athletes from Darjeeling, Sikkim and Andhra
Pradesh bagged four gold, one silver and four bronze medals under
different categories during the 8th CK Malaysia Classic International
Taekwondo Championship-2014, a press conference was told here today.
Twenty countries had participated in the tournament at Melawati stadium in Selangor, Malaysia, through 8-10 August. Athletes from Darjeeling district bagged three gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals under the 1st senior division, senior team event and cadet junior categories, according to Tilak Subba, an athlete from Kalimpong.
Athletes from Sikkim bagged 1 gold and 2 bronze, he said.
Mr Subba, who bagged 2 gold and 1 silver medals, said: "It was a challenging tournament. Twenty countries participated in the event and 14 of us from India gave our best to win the championship."
This is the third time in a row that Mr Subba has brought home gold
medals from the tournament organized by the CK Taek wondo Club of Malaysia.
The other two athletes from Darjeeling who participated in the tournament, Anu Mukhia and Adwayti Subba won 1 gold (senior team event) and a bronze (cadet junior division) respectively, Mr Subba
