Protesting rumours that the ailing Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) chief Subhas Ghising had passed away in a Delhi hospital, party leaders in Kurseong today met police officials and requested them to “stop such frequent rumours that have disturbed GNLF supporters in Darjeeling Hills.”
Talking to reporters, GNLF Kurseong branch general secretary Robin Lama and the party’s spokesperson Daya Dewan said they visited the Kurseong police station and met the IC there.
According to Mr Dewan, Mr Ghisingh, after hearing about such rumours in Delhi, has condemned the matter.
“We have decided to submit a memorandum to the Darjeeling Superintendent of Police tomorrow, demanding immediate action against such kind of misleading rumours,” Mr Dewan said.
He added that the rumour mill started churning since last evening. “Fake news that said Mr Ghisingh who was in coma has died went viral on Facebook. All this is only creating uneasiness among the GNLF supporters and it is making them aggressive too. The GNLF leadership is trying to control its cadres who feel that all this could be a political conspiracy,” he said.
“Such rumours should be stopped immediately as our supremo (Ghisingh) is presently in good health in Delhi,” he added.
This is not the first time that such rumours on the former Darjeeling strongman have been doing the rounds in the Hills. (sns)
