West Bengal CM Mamata Bnaerjee rejects the Gita as national book
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bnaerjee today rejected the Centre's move to declare the Gita as "the national book." The Congress and the CPI-M also condemned the move stating that it goes against the secular fabric of the country.
Miss Banerjee stated : "Our Constitution says India is a secular country. The Constitution is the Holy Book in a democracy. We respect all Holy Books. The Quran, Puran, Ved, Vedanta, Bible, Tripitak, Zend Avesta, Guru Granth Sahib, Gita - all are our pride."
Mr Pradeep Bhattacharya, former PCC chief and Congress Rajya Sabha MP, said the teaching of the Gita hold good for people of different religions as well. "But before declaring the Gita as the national book Prime Minister Narendra Modi should remember that India is a secular country and every religion has an equally important book of its own.
While giving the Gita the status of a national book, he should try to feel the sentiments of people belonging to different religions and should accord the same status to the books of those religious as well," Mr Bhattacharya said.
CPI-M state committee member Sujan Chakroborty denounced the Central  move and said it would send a wrong signal to the country and deal a blow to its secular credentials.
"We don't approve this kind of religious move. The Gita is a religious book and India is a secular country. Giving the religious book ~ the Gita ~ the status of  national book will have a disastrous effect,' Mr Chakroborty said.. (sns)
