The Mary’s Grotto at St Mary’s hill in Kurseong was allegedly vandalised by criminals early on Friday, triggering outrage among the members of the local Christian community.
According to police, alleged miscreants smashed the glass which covered the grotto and dislodged the statue of Mary in what could be assumed was a part of attacks on such institutions across the country.
An FIR has been registered at Kurseong police station against unknown persons, they said. According to residents of the area, the criminals had wanted to hurt the religious sentiments of people in the town.
The Christian community leaders have demanded firm action against the culprits immediately, said a police spokesperson. The Mary’s Grotto is a sacred place for the Christians in Kurseong, the Roman Catholic group in particular, and hundreds of school students light candles and offer prayers while heading towards their respective schools. The Grotto is carved out of rock similar to that of ‘Lourdes Grotto’ in France. (HS)
