NBDD minister Gautam Deb facing tough time inside party

Gautam Deb
Senior Trinamool Congress leader and North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb is facing a tough time inside the party after the loss to the Left Front in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation election. Party chief Mamata Banerjee, who had envisaged of taking over the SMC board and entrusted Deb of making her dream come true, is not happy with the development, said sources.

Deb, who is the front man of the ruling party in North Bengal, was given the task to lead the TMC to victory in the Lok Sabha election from Darjeeling constituency and the recently held civic polls in Siliguri. But the ruling party suffered defeats on either occasion. Political analysts said the alleged involvement of some TMC leaders in the Saradha financial scandal and the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority scam along with the increasing incidents of violence and crime have played a major part in the TMC’s defeat in Siliguri.

The defeat has fuelled anger among TMC supporters and they have started speaking against the NBDD minister. Some of them said Deb is unable to perform his primary task as he is overburdened with responsibilities. The high command must contemplate over distributing responsibilities. When contacted, Deb refused to say anything on the matter. “I have talked a lot for the last few days. Now I don’t want to talk. I failed to lead the party to victory,” he said. (HS)
