Siliguri, known for its overflowing retail shops and high-end malls, is witnessing a rising trend in online shopping. About 25 per cent of its youth between the age group of 16 to 35 years prefer online shopping when it comes to buying swanky electronic gadgets, fashionable clothes, and accessories. According to available figures, Siliguri ranks eighth among cities in West Bengal, a state where the trend is picking up.
Siliguri youths place online orders to buy their favourite gadgets, their accessories, branded apparels and shoes. Among electronic gadgets, they mostly go for latest cellphones,iPads, walkman, iPods and laptops. They are hooked to online shopping for the fact that they have choice of a wide range of items to shop for at considerably low prices. The discounts and offers are the other factors that push the trend forward.
Most of the denizens of Siliguri say they preferred to shop online considering convenience to shop 24X7, besides it enables them to collect detailed product information. ''One can also do research on a variety of available products and compare prices of different vendors anywhere in the world,'' one of the respondents said.
Another adds that facilities like free shipping, product ratings, reviews, demonstration videos and free return policy, especially the cash on delivery option largely influenced the purchasing decision of consumers shopping online.
Apart from the young population, heads of families in Siliguri too are indulging themselves in online shopping. At least 10 per cent of urban housewives in the town depend on online retail merchants for household and culinary products, also followed by beauty and clothing products for the fashion forward or working women. According to them, online shopping saves them from walking the busy streets of Siliguri under scorching heat, also saving the auto fare or fuel.
With the rise in online shopping in the town, courier companies have been booming in business as the purchased orders are delivered to the doorstep of the consumers by them. Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Jabong are the three overused online portals by the shoppers of Siliguri , as they provide quick dispatch service and easy returns. Formerly, Homeshop18 used to be their favourite. We would receive over 20,000 parcels from the company in a week, but now they have fallen,” says a courier staff. (HS)
