Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri speaks over resignation

Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri
Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri has said that the three Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha members of the state Assembly from Darjeeling Hills were not consulted when the party took a decision that they would step down in protest against what the GJMM called 'state interference' in matters of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
According to Chettri, the GJMM had always sought the MLAs' opinions whenever the party faced problems, but that it did not consult them on the resignation decision.
"This was indeed a humiliating act from the GJMM," Chettri said in Kalimpong on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference at his residence, the MLA said, "Had we been consulted on this matter, we would have contributed with our thought so that the situation could have been different, but our opinions were never sought."
"Any literate person would feel humiliated about such an act that from the GTA," he added. The GJMM has said that the three Hill MLAs — Trilok Dewan (Darjeeling), Rohit Sharma (Kurseong), HB Chettri (Kalimong) — would tender their resignation from the Assembly on 18 September.
While his party is planning his resignation and is snubbing chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is on a visit to the Hills, Chettri on Tuesday met the CM in Kalimpong and discussed plans to turn Kalimpong sub-division into a separate district.
The MLA said he has many probabilities at the moment, which includes the likelihood of him "leaving the GJMM."
Asked to clarify on the matter further, Chettri asked the journalists to "wait till 18 September."(sns)
