Darjeeling: The Centre has decided to release Rs 134
crore to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), a move seen as
the Narendra Modi government's endorsement of the current hill board
led by Binay Tamang.
"The Centre probably realises that development activities have
started in a structured manner since the (current) board of
administrators was formed in September last year," GTA chief Binay
Tamang said on Thursday.
Tamang was named the chief in the aftermath of the statehood
agitation last September, replacing his Gorkha Janmukti rival Bimal
Gurung who faces cases related to the unrest and is in hiding.
Sources said the Centre would release the money through the
Bengal government. "The BJP-led central government might have decided to
release the funds to send the message that it cares for the hills,"
said an observer.
