Kolkata: The Self-Help Group (SHG) department is preparing a blueprint to ensure that various development boards under the newly crafted Kalimpong district can avail the facilities of various schemes and benefits, which the department has been undertaking under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
On his four-day visit to North Bengal recently, state minister for Consumer Affairs and Self-Help Group Sadhan Pande held a meeting with the top representatives of the development boards in Kalimpong and apprised them of the various schemes of the department.
"The minister has directed the chairmans of the boards to submit a proposal highlighting certain areas in which the department can provide them training and create infrastructure for any production unit if required. They have to forward their proposal through the District Magistrate of Kalimpong, who along with the senior government officials at the district level were present in the meeting," a senior official of West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Ltd (WBSCL) said. Some of these development boards have informed the ministers that they have already formed Self-Help Groups.
The minister visited a number of small units that have been doing activities like floriculture, horticulture, orchid plantation and urged them to form Self-Help Groups so that they too can avail the fruits of benefits. "Our basic aim is to set up micro, projects like poultry shed, goatery shed, poly green house, etc. for sustainable development and livelihood of the SHG members," Self-Help Group minister Sadhan Pande said.
Kalimpong, the 21st district in the state, was formed on February 14 2017, after splitting from Darjeeling. It consists of the Kalimpong Municipality and three community development blocks: Kalimpong I, Kalimpong II and
Gorubathan. It may be mentioned that WBSCL under the SHG department has been providing training to the SHG members on various fields like tailoring, goatery, poultry, floriculture, hospitality management, handicrafts, jute crafts, food products, computer application, mushroom cultivation, beautician, etc.
"We are also organising melas/fairs for marketing of SHG products and providing interest subsidy for these members by creating bank linkage in the nomenclature of West Bengal Swanirbhar Sahayak Prakalpa (WBSSP), an interest subsidy scheme of the state for the SHGs," a senior WBSCL official maintained.
The minister during his visit held a meeting with the SHG groups of all the six districts of North Bengal and the district administration and instructed them to speed up work for the ongoing projects and come up with new project proposals so that more number of people can
avail the benefits. The minister also inaugurated the circuit bench of West Bengal State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission in Siliguri.
