Darjeeling Tibetan community celebrates 'Thank you India Year'

Darjeeling: The Tibetan community of Darjeeling observed "Thank you India" and the 29th anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama — being conferred the Nobel Peace prize. Incidentally, the Tibetan government in exile and Tibetans across the country have been observing the year 2018 as "Thank You India Year." "This is to publicly express gratitude to the Government of India and its citizens for enabling Tibetans not only to lead a decent life but also help them preserve their culture, language and religion. 

Tibetans for generations will not forget the profound support that is being extended by India at the time of crisis in Tibet owing to Chinese occupation," stated Tashi Thendup, president, Thank You India Organizing Committee in Darjeeling. The day was marked by prayers, speeches and staging of traditional songs and dances by the Tibetan community; students of the Central School for Tibetans and various other Tibetan organisations. "On the occasion of the 29th year of conferring Nobel Peace Prize to Dalai Lama, blankets and shawls were handed over to needy families under the Cover the Cold programme," stated Jigme, Secretary of the organising committee. The Thank You India 2018 programme had been marked with a public prayer session at Chowrasta on May 31 for peace, prosperity and progress of India. On June 5, more than 100 saplings were planted in the Observatory Hill area in Darjeeling.
