Darjeeling: The Tibetan Women's National Uprising Day was commemorated on Tuesday in Darjeeling, along with the rest of the globe. The Tibetan Women's Association (TWA) has requested United Nations and world community intervention in the Tibetan issue.
In 1959 on March 10, thousands of Tibetans had converged on the streets of Lhasa, the Tibetan Capital, as a mark of protest against the Chinese occupation. It marked the beginning of the Lhasa Uprising. On March 12, the Tibetan women had led a peaceful demonstration. The Chinese had quelled the uprising with brutal force, resulting in the death of thousands.
"This is the 60th year of the Tibetan Women's National Uprising Day. March 12, 1959 marked the first active, women-led non-violent protest against Chinese occupation of Tibet that led to the foundation for a peaceful resistance. The women of Tibet have stood against the most repressive regime with courage and determination and continue to do so," stated Choden, the president of the Darjeeling chapter of the TWA.
A TWA release alleged that the Communist Chinese leaders are determined to eradicate the Tibetan race. "China persistently and deliberately continues to violate human rights in Tibet. They have denied the Tibetans right to self-determination," stated the release.
A programme was held at Darjeeling Chowrasta to commemorate the day. Prayers were offered and speeches reminiscing the sacrifices by the valiant men and women of Tibet were delivered. A peace rally was also held.
