Darjeeling: The
Darjeeling district administration has repeatedly denied permission to
opposition parties from conducting election meetings in the hills. After
being repeatedly denied election meeting permission, a coalition of
four main political parties in the hills -- Gorkha Janmukti Morcha,
Gorkha National Liberation Front, Communist Party of Revolutionary
Marxist and Bharatiya Janata Party -- on Monday took out a cultural
rally showcasing Gorkha unity and solidarity. They are calling it
‘Gorkha Ekta Maharally’.
Corresponding with EastMojo, a
GNLF leader Arbin Subba said, “We are showcasing the fact that the hills
are united, and that our blood will always be thicker than any divisive
agenda set by TMC agents.”
Agreeing to the sentiments, GJM
spokesperson BP Bajgain told the press, “Yesterday [Sunday], we had held
a political meeting in Kurseong, and the district administration
permitted TMC to conduct their political meeting only 50 metres away
from our venue. Today, we asked for a rally permission at Gorkha Stadium
in Lebong, but the same was denied to us. So, this is how we are
showing our unity... together, we will fight against this administrative
discrimination and subversion of our democratic rights.”
With
voting scheduled for April 18, Darjeeling is gearing up for a major
showdown between TMC and BJP, both supported by local political parties.
