TMC in-charge Sardha Rai Subba in poll contest, Neeraj Zimba was attacked

Darjeeling/Kolkata: Binay Tamang — who has staked his chairmanship in GTA to win the Darjeeling assembly bypoll — seems to have hit a stumbling block with a top politician from the Hills Trinamool Congress deciding to contest the May 19 polls as an Independent. Trinamool is supporting Tamang. Sardha Rai Subba, in-charge of TMC (Hills) women’s wing who filed her nomination, said she has not resigned from the party but filed her papers after “pressure from supporters”.

The development comes around the same time that the United Gorkha Alliance (a coalition of the GJM-Bimal Gurung faction-GNLF-BJP) alleged that its candidate Neeraj Zimba was attacked while he was travelling in his SUV at Happy Valley on Thursday.

Subba said she wished to be officially acknowledged by her party. “My supporters requested me to contest the bypoll and accordingly I have filed my nomination as an Independent candidate. I will consult my supporters even if my party high command orders me to withdraw,” she said. It is learnt that senior leaders of the TMC (Hills) party will sit for a meeting on Friday.
