Sources in Kolkata Police say this is an outcome of protests that had broken out during the Lockdown at the Police Training School in Kolkata. On 19th May, at least 500 policemen raised lathis and protested on the streets for allegedly being kept with Covid-19 positive cops in the same barracks with social distancing norms. Reports also claimed, the agitating policemen had vandalised their Deputy Commissioner's car the same night when he had reached to pacify the cops.
The next morning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to the Police establishment to firefight the situation herself. She stood in the rain and thanked the policemen for their service during such tough times and assured them to look into their complaints. Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma was also present at the spot alongside the CM.
Sources say an inquiry into the matter had been also ordered by the CM who is also in charge of Home Ministry. These developments took place at a time when the state was preparing for Cyclone Amphan's landfall in less than 24 hours.
Two weeks since the unprecedented protests by police personnel on the streets of the city, Deputy Commissioner (Combat) Col Nevendera Singh Paul too has been transferred, he is now posted as DC of Police (Wireless Branch). The agitating policemen had raised serious allegations against him before the Chief Minister on May 20th. The Inspector of Combat Battalion, Kolkata Armed Police has now been transferred to Alipurduar District as Inspector of Police, Missing Persons Bureau.
At least 12 police personnel of Combat Battalion had tested positive for Covid-19 in the city, Sources say at least 220 Kolkata Police personnel have tested Covid positive of which at least 100 have been cured and discharged while one 47-year-old constable of Shakespeare Sarani Police Station has succumbed to Covid-19, Kolkata police have been seeing protesting in Garfa Police Station, at the 4th Battalion of Armed Police headquarters and it all started with the protests at night in Alipore, outside the Police Training School.
