Sikkim, a state that was untouched by the novel coronavirus pandemic until recently is now witnessing a sharp rise in confirmed cases of infection. The demography of the region that is prone to landslides poses a major issue but the state administration is making continuous efforts to provide healthcare even in the farthest areas of the state.

District Magistrate of East Sikkim and Chairperson of the District District Disaster Management Authority, IAS officer Raj Yadav said, "Whereas positive cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the following area of East Sikkim district which may become a probable hotspot of Covid-19 unless strict measures are taken immediately for the geographic containment of the concerned area as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India."

Affected areas included in the new list of containment zones from the district include the IBM area and Majhigaon in Rangpo, postal department residential colony above TNA School, DPH ward, and Nandak Saramsa GPU.

Incident commanders have been tasked with monitoring each of these areas while enforcing protocols. They will be responsible for demarcating specific entry and exit points along with restricting the movement of all persons and vehicles except those concerned with essential services or bound by medical emergencies.

Apart from the safety protocols, gatherings of five or more people in one place have been strictly prohibited within containment zones. Failure to comply with the norms will invite punishment, including actions under section 144 of the CrPC and section 188 of the IPC.

Earlier, the Sikkim government declared a weeklong lockdown in the state in light of the sudden surge in confirmed Covid-19 cases. The lockdown currently in force in the state will continue till July 27. Chief Minister PS Goley has assured all support to citizens. Supply of essentials and treatment of Covid-19 patients will not be disrupted, he said.
