Siliguri/Kolkata, Sep 20 :After inspecting tremor-ravaged north Bengal, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today left for Gangtok to oversee rescue and relief operation in Sikkim.
The Chief Minister would take stock of the post-quake situation in Gangtok and the adjoining areas, official sources said.
Ms Banerjee is likely to have a meeting with the police and other government officials of the Himalayan state in respect of ongoing rescue operation.
Incidentally, the Chief Minister was staying overnight at Siliguri but it was not confirmed earlier whether she would go to Sikkim or return to Kolkata.
Ms Banerjee, during her trip to north Bengal yesterday, visited Siliguri district hospital to examine the conditions of the injured and asked her party leaders to bring the victims, undergoing treatment at other hospitals in the hills there for better treatment.
Holding a meeting with DMs and SPs, she had asked them to conduct a survey to estimate the damage to houses and other vital installations in the quake.
She had also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
