Congress submitted a memorandum for special package for quake-hit Darjeeling Hills

Siliguri, Sep 29 : The Congress today sought a special quake-relief package for Darjeeling from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his brief stopover at Bagdogra Airport on way to quake-ravaged Himalayan state of Sikkim.

A five-member team, led by Darjeeling district Congress president Shankar Malakar (legislator) called on the Prime Minster at the airport this morning and submitted a memorandum for special package for quake-hit Darjeeling Hills in north Bengal.

The 6.9 magnitude temblor on September 18 has destroyed property, mainly road and bridges, worth Rs 550 crore in the hilly terrains and killed some 12 people, eight in Darjeeling hills, three in North Dinajpur and one in Jalpaiguri district.

Mr Malakar said his delegation including Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation Gangotri Dutta narrated the prime minister the prevailing situation in the hills after the quake.

He said the Prime Minister listened to them and assured to look into the demand for special Darjeeling package.

Meanwhile, a fresh landslide damaged the national highway (55) at Tindharia yesterday causing further delay in reopening the main artery linking Darjeeling and Kurseong with Siliguri.

The landslides triggered by heavy rains had endangered the safety of about ten families, who were asked to move to safer sites.

The 80-km road has been closed since June 16 after landslides broke link.

The road along with the Darjeeling Heritage Railway (DHR also known as toy train) tracks collapsed along a 200-metre stretch.
