Delhi University’s department of Social Work to send a team to quake-affected Sikkim

Delhi University’s department of Social Work will send a need assessment team to quake-affected regions in Sikkim, ahead of starting a rehabilitation mission there in collaboration with NGOs already working on the site, head of the department professor Sushma Batra said on Monday.

“A three-member team consisting of a professor and two readers, from the department, will leave for Bagdogra in Sikkim around October 4. We have got permission from the University to start work and the final details of the mission are being worked out,” she said.

The department plans to start a mission similar to the one it had set up in Bihar’s Samastipur district, which was inundated when the Kosi river embankment was breached in 2008. The mission in Samastipur, which is still running, was set up and is run by the department independently while the one planned for Sikkim will be in collaboration with local NGOs, prof Batra said.

The University has asked the School of Social Work to conduct an assessment of the needs of those affected by the earth quake and has also pledged its assistance in the execution of any relief programme the department plans for the region.

“The team will find out the types of requirements that exist, both short-term and long-term. The details of the work to be done will be chalked out by the second week of October,” prof Batra said.

The Delhi School of Social Work collaborates with the National Institute of Disaster Management on various projects, she said.
