Gorkhaland agitation in Darjeeling - Stage set for renewed

Despite the mercury dipping down steadily, the political barometer seems to be shooting up in the Darjeeling Hills, with the stage all set for different political exercises by various political camps with the demand of “Gorkhaland.” While the task force of Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP)
has decided to meet Union leaders, leaders of the opposition in Delhi; closer to home the (GJYM- youth wing of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha) has started gearing up for the resurrected “Gorkhaland” agitation with poster campaigns, rallies and public meetings lined up.

The BGP- an apolitical organization working for the socio-economic upliftment of the Gorkhas living throughout India, has constituted a task force with a single point demand of Gorkhaland. “Under the aegis of this task force pro- Gorkhaland outfits will be departing for Delhi on December 7” stated Govind Chettri, Spokesperson, Communist Part of Revolutionary Marxist (CPRM.)

The political parties from the Hills scheduled to send their representatives to Delhi include CPRM, All India Gorkha League (AIGL,) GNLF (C) and Gorkhaland Rajya Nirman Morcha. All these political outfits will be sitting in a meeting in Delhi on December 8 to chart out future course of action.

“In Delhi we will be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh; Union Home Minister P Chidambaram; UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi; leader of the opposition Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and  Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley along with BJP President Nitin Gadkari with the Gorkhaland demand” added Chettri.

Meanwhile the GJYM has lined up rallies on December 11. Pro Gorkhaland rallies will be taken out in Darjeeling and Kalimpong along with smaller constituency wise rallies on this day. “On December 18 we have called for a public meeting in Mungpoo. GJM President Bimal Gurung has also been invited. We hope that he will lead our agitation” stated GJYM General Secretary Priyavardhan Rai. Other frontal organisations of the GJM including the Gorkha Janmukti Nari Morcha have pledged full support to the Youth wing for the renewed agitation.

Meanwhile pro-Gorkhaland banners, festoons have been put up by the GJYM in the National Highway 31A area. Similar signage will be put up throughout the Hills by the GJYM.
