Kalimpong News | Kalimpong to organize Organic Mela

KALIMPONG January 31: Krishak Kalyan Mahasangh is all set to organize Organic Mela in Kalimpong. The union power minister Sharad Power has been invited by the Sangh as the chief guest of the inaugural function.
According to general secretary of the Sangh, Bishnu Chettri, the mela will be different in comparison to other mela. “We are in a mission to make Darjeeling an organic state” said Chettri. Adding more he led emphasized to create Darjeeling as a model state. The mela will be organized up to a national level standard added Chettri. “The main objective of organising the mela is to compete in the international market” quoted Chettri and added that arrangement of new technologies will be also provided to the farmers.


Guardian Forum writes to MLAs, highlights school problems 

KALIMPONG January 31:The Guardian Forum of the hills has sent a letter to MLA Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri and MLA Trilok Dewan today highlighting various problems of the school which re-opens soon for the next academic session. In the letter the forum has informed about the vacant post of the teachers, the Nepali student facing problems as the teacher teaches in English etc. Member of the forum Tara Sundas mentions about the internal fights among the teachers which has a negative effects on the students. Regarding appointment the Forum has appealed the vacant post of primary teachers to be fulfilled at the beginning of the new academic session. Books on the other hand should be distributed too added the Forum. The Forum has also questioned about the scarcity of postal stamps in post office which has been a severe problem for the ongoing police recruitment.

Lepchas worships Teesta-Rangit, pays homage to the ancestors

KALIMPONG January 30:Teesta-Rangit is regarded as the holy river of the Lepchas. Lepchas history of bonding with the river dates back to the history as various auspicious occasions and rituals of the community like marriage, birthday and other programme remains to be unfulfilled without the holiness of the river. “Without the holy river of the Teesta-Rangit, any occasion of the Lepchas is ought to be unfulfilled” said president of Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (ILTA) LS Tamsang.  As always the Lepchas today too worshipped Teesta to pay homage to the ancestors. “We get power from the ancestors in worshipping the holy river” said Tamsang. According to the Lepchas the holy river Teesta symbolizes male and Rangit as female.Adding more Tamsang said that the West Bengal government has been cooperative in regards to the conservation of culture and tradition only in words not in deeds. “We believe that the government will fulfill whatever they have promised for the preservation of the culture and traditions” added Tamsang. The Lepchas have a typical and old culture and we have demanded for the Lepcha Development Council for the preservation of the culture, but the government has not acted on it, he added.The Lepchas today worshipped their customs but not religion as there are diversities of religion like Hindus, Christians and others religions among the community.
