TMC gears up for GTA poll

SILIGURI, 26 JUNE: With the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) election just round the corner, the Trinamul Congress is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that it emerges a winner in the 29 July election. A meeting was held among the Trinamul Congress activists, who recently joined the party from the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM), Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), All India Gorkha League (AIGL) in the Darjeeling Hills and the Darjeeling district Trinamul leaders at North Bengal Development Department (NBDD) in Siliguri today.
A senior leader of the Darjeeling district Trinamul Congress Mr Soumitra Kundu said the Trinamul activists from several blocks met the district committee Trinamul leaders to discuss the poll strategies. “The party is gearing up for the upcoming GTA poll. We have asked our party activists to prepare a primary list of candidates. The list would be finalised on 30 June. As soon as chief minister Mamata Banerjee gives us the go by  the nominations will be submitted,” said Mr Kundu, who was present in the meeting. A Trinamul activist Mr Rajen Mukia, a former GNLF leader who joined the party recently, said the Trinamul Congress was fully prepared for the GTA poll. “We are ready for the election. We have discussed the poll strategies in the meeting. But the Trinamul leadership would take the final call. We have also talked about the formation of the committee in the Darjeeling Hills but the any decision on this issue will be taken in the next meeting on 30 July. The district party president and north Bengal affairs minister, Mr Gautam Deb, will be present at the meeting,” Mr Mukhia said.
Around 50 Trinamul activists across the Hills participated in the meeting. Another Trinamul activist, who recently joined the party after leaving the GJMM, said the security arrangements for the Trinamul activists, who have been allegedly getting threat calls from other political parties in the Hills especially the GJMM, were also discussed at length."
“The GJMM activists have been threatening us more than often. We have raised the issue in the meeting and senior Trinamul leaders assured that they would look into the matter,” he said.
