Gorkha Janamukti Morcha won 28 out of 45 seats uncontested

KOLKATA: The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has got majority in the elections to the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) Sabha on Thursday even though the elections are scheduled to take place on July 29. This is because of the fact that the GJM has won 28 of the total 45 seats unopposed. To form the GTA Sabha any political party will require to win 23 seats and the GJM has already won 28.

GJM leader Roshan Giri told ET on Thursday that ""we have already won 28 seats and are expecting to win all the 45 constituencies under the GTA Sabha. The CPIM had fielded 13 candidates in the GTA elections, but the party has withdrawn all their candidates as they have no organisational base in the Darjeeling Hills. Trinamool Congress has also fielded 17 candidates, but they would not be able to win a single seat.""

Giri is confident about winning all the 45 seats. ""People of Darjeeling are with us. We are struggling for them for the past eight years. Neither CPIM nor the Trinamool Congress has any organisational base in the Hills and that is why we are confident about winning all the seats,"" Giri said. However, the CPIM has complained about "GJM-sponsored terrorism in Darjeeling."

"We had fielded 17 candidates. But we have been forced to withdraw all our candidates because of tremendous pressure and intimidation to our candidates by the GJM activists. Elections to the GTA has become a farce as the GJM is not allowing anyone to contest the polls. They are using muscle power to prevent us from contesting the elections. The district administration has also failed to give adequate protection to our candidates and under such a situation, we are compelled to take back all our nominees," CPIM's Darjeeling district secretariat member and former West Bengal minister Ashok Bhattacharjee told ET over phone on Thursday.

Thursday was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers and the opposition CPIM has withdrawn all its 13 candidates, making it easy for the GJM to win the GTA Sabha. The Congress has not fielded any candidate in the GTA elections and it is expected that Trinamool Congress, which has put up 17 candidates, will contest the GJM during the July 29 elections.
