Kurseong: CM asks Hills people to focus on tourism

KURSEONG, 13 JULY: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee urged the people of the Darjeeling HIills to work for the development of tourism.
Addressing the 198th birth anniversary programme of the legendary Nepali poet, Aadi Kavi Bhanubhakta Aacharya, she said tourists keep complaining of want of sufficient number of lodging facilities in the Hills. “Many of them are being forced to spend the nights in their vehicles. I am convinced that the situation can be improved if the locals and the tourism department arrange accommodation for the tourists. The number of tourists is growing with peace having returned in the Hills. Tourism potential being fully explored would go a long way in developmentally transforming the Hills. The need of the hour is planned promotion of tourism,” she said.
She further said she had gathered information about the tourism prospects while moving to Kalimpong yesterday. “I have seen many places in Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik which can be promoted as tourist spots. In case this happens it would help the Hill people immensely,” she said.  Stressing on the participation of the locals in the tourism expansion projects, the chief minister said it is unfortunate that the people of the Hills are not using the potential to the full.  sns
