SILIGURI, 21 AUG: A seven-member GTA delegation which left for Kolkata
and New Delhi today will raise the issues of territory expansion and
taking invitee members from the Terai-Dooars region into the GTA, said
the GJMM general secretary, Mr Roshan Giri. The GTA’s principal
secretary, Mr Soumitra Mohan, is one of the members of the delegation.
“We are convinced that the long-vegetating Terai-Dooars region would look up developmentally if these areas are included in the GTA jurisdiction. A majority of the people residing there are of the same view. So we will keep raising the issue at all levels,” the GJMM leader said while talking to reporters at Bagdogra airport.
He said the GTA Sabha should be expanded to accommodate people from the Terai-Dooars as invitee members.
“We have decided to contest the upcoming panchayat election in alliance with the ABAVP faction led by Mr John Barla. My party will insist on taking members from the region into the Hill body to make it more representative,” Mr Giri said.
The GJMM delegation led by GTA chief executive, Mr Bimal Gurung, will leave for Delhi on 23 August. “We will meet the President of India, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh, the Union home minister, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde and the Union finance minister, Mr P Chidambaram, in Delhi,” Mr Giri said.
“It is a mere courtesy visit following the formation of the GTA. Tomorrow we will meet the Governor, Mr N K Narayanan, in Kolkata, but the meeting with the chief minister is not confirmed yet,” he said.
When questioned about the three-member fact-finding committee constituted to look into the Shyamal Sen Committee report the party has rejected, Mr Giri said they will convey their view on the matter at the appropriate time.
The delegation is expected to discuss funds allocation, improvement of tourism infrastructure and the security issue involving the Gorkhas residing in different parts of the country.
“The last issue has assumed importance in view of the recent exodus from the Northeast. Mr Gurung has already written to the Union home minister urging him to ensure the security of the Gorkha people,” Mr Giri said.
