“I want to establish a sports academy in Kalimpong and I have spoken with Morcha Chief Bimal Gurung regarding this”, said the Sikkimese sniper Bhaichung Bhutia.Bhaichung, the former Captain of the Indian football team was in the town today to inaugurate the Food Trafford Restaurant situated at Palladium Complex, Damber Chowk. This newly inaugurated restaurant will be recognized as a ‘sports restaurant’, it has been informed.Expressing his desire to develop sports in Sikkim and the hills, Bhaichung said that a proper sports field with good facilities is a much felt need in the hills. Not only in this region, but sports facilities needs to be developed more in whole of the country, he added.“Now since the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) is formed, and I have heard that its Chief Executive (Bimal Gurung) is very much interested in sports, I hope he will be concentrating on this matter”, he stated.Further, speaking about the scope for sports in the region, he said that there are many chances for it to flourish in Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong as the kids here are interested in sports. The only thing they lack is proper training and facilities. Thus, once if these needs are catered, the children will get more opportunities in this field and follow their passion, he concluded.
