Darjeeling, Dec. 2.TT: A
former Ramakrishna Mission school alumnus has approached the GTA seeking
its help to make a memorial to Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita at
Roy Villa in Darjeeling, where she breathed her last in 1911.
K.C. Mitra, a Siliguri-based doctor
who had studied in the Ramkrishna Mission Vidyapith in Jharkhand’s
Deoghar, said: “I have spoken to Suhita Nandaji Maharaj, the general
secretary of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Belur Math, and they are keen
to have a memorial to Sister Nivedita as well as Swami Vivekananda in
Darjeeling.”
Roy Villa, he
said, “can be converted into a memorial and a centre of service for
girls and local youths. The centre will also be a tourist attraction”.
Sister Nivedita,
born to Scottish parents and who had lived in Ireland, became a follower
of Swami Vivekananda and moved to Calcutta in 1898 and chose to work
for the education of girls in India.
She was cremated in Darjeeling.
Swami
Atmapriyananda, the VC of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University,
Belur Math, yesterday visited Roy Villa with Mitra and also had a
meeting with Darjeeling MLA Trilok Dewan and Amar Singh Rai, the
Darjeeling municipality chairman.
“We will try our
best to come up with something before the 150th birth anniversary of
Swami Vivekananda next year,” Dewan said.
