Super-speciality hospital to come up in Darjeeling hills

The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) today announced that it would set up the first super-speciality hospital of the hills at Dhudia in Kurseong subdivision.

"We are looking for land to set up the super-speciality hospital. Construction will start immediately after selecting the plot," Bimal Gurung, the chief executive of the GTA, said while inaugurating a farmers' fair at Jamuni in Darjeeling.

"Dhudia has been selected because of its proximity to Bagdogra airport. It will be convenient to bring doctors from outside," he said.

Dhudia is around 20 km from Bagdogra and 60 km from Darjeeling.

The details of hospital plan have not been finalised yet, GTA sources said adding the PPP model could be followed to set up the hospital which had been mentioned in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, the Centre and the state government.

The GTA might also request the Centre to fund the project, the sources said.

The GJM has demanded that the Centre give the GTA an annual special grant of Rs 400 crore for the next 10 years, instead of the three-year package of Rs 600 crore as agreed on in the MoA.
